Contributors

Sandra Ingerman and Hank Wesselman have gathered a circle of western Shamanic elders to offer a wide range of shamanic experience and view points. Thank you all for this landmark book. Here is a little background information on each of the circle.

Tom Cowan

Tom Cowan is a shamanic practitioner specializing in Celtic visionary and healing techniques.  He combines universal core shamanism with traditional European spirit lore to create spiritual practices that can heal and enrich one’s own life and the lives of others.  He is an internationally respected teacher, author, lecturer, and tour leader.  He has taught training programs in England, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy; and most recently he was the first American shaman to teach in Slovakia.

Tom is the author of Yearning For The Wind, Fire in the Head: Shamanism and the Celtic Spirit, Shamanism as a Spiritual Practice for Daily Life, The Pocket Guide to Shamanism, The Book of Seance, The Way of the Saints: Prayers, Practices, and Meditations and Wending Your Way: A New Version of the Old English Rune Poem.

Tom grew up in Missouri, and received a doctorate in history from St. Louis University.  He taught history and humanities in Memphis during the 1970s, and moved to New York City in 1980 to pursue a career as a freelance writer.

In 1983 Tom met Michael Harner from whom he learned core shamanism which continues to be Tom’s primary spiritual practice.  His lifelong interest in mystical traditions led him to develop ways to practice shamanism in the context of Celtic spirituality and other European-based spiritual disciplines.

Tom continues to study with Harner’s Foundation for Shamanic Studies and other teachers of shamanism and spirituality.  From 1996-1998 Tom taught Celtic Shamanism for the Foundation.  Periodically he leads tours to Ireland or Scotland to practice shamanism at sacred sites and work with the spirits of the land.

Tom is a minister in the Circle of the Sacred Earth, a church of animism dedicated to shamanic principles and practices.  Today he lives in New York’s Hudson River Valley where he offers training workshops, spiritual retreats, and healing sessions for groups and individuals.  His website is riverdrum.com

Carol Proudfoot-Edgar

Carol Proudfoot-Edgar has taught shamanism since 1982. In addition, her specialties include Bear Medicine, Spirits of Place, and developing women’s circles and Teachers. For Twelve years she has led a group of women physicians in intergreating shamanism into both their personal and professional lives. She has been a teacher for the Department of Integrative Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. In addition, she considers one of her primary roles to be that of ceremonialist.

Carol is an explorer who perceives her work to be that of assisting individuals to probe beyond the known realities and to venture outside the parameters for contextualizing and manifesting the future. Carol says that through such explorations. “Spirit can meet us, and together we can construct a web of compassion and joy” that can hold and support the divine nature of every being  and Element on this great Earth planet.

Since 1995, Carol has been involved in developing nonprofit organizations that will coordinate the efforts of individuals seeking to bringing change that is grounded in shamanic consciousness. She is especially interested in using technology to further coordinate work around the globe. José Luis Stevens Ph.D

José Luis Stevens Ph.D. is the president and co-founder (with wife Lena Stevens) of Power Path Seminars, an international school and consulting firm dedicated to the study and application of shamanism and indigenous wisdom to business and  everyday life. José completed a ten year apprenticeship with a Huichol Maracame (shaman) in the Sierras of Central Mexico. In addition he is studying intensively with Shipibo (shamans) in the Peruvian Amazon and with Pacos, (shamans) in the Andes in Peru

In 1983 he completed His doctoral dissertation at the California Institute of Integral Studies focusing on the interface between shamanism and western psychological counseling. Since then he has studied cross cultural shamanism around the world to distill the core elements of shamanic healing and practice. As an international lecturer and consultant he has worked with a huge range of individuals and businesses to help them discover their most effective path of service and success. He has had the good fortune to work with individuals at the highest levels of government and professional life to support their understanding of their own potential and that of their associates.

As an integral part of this work Jose has helped to develop systems for understanding people that are unparalleled in the field of psychology and business.

Jose is a licensed Clinical Social Worker, Life coach, and master teacher with more than thirty five years of experience. Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D

Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D is a medical anthropologist and psychologist who has studied the spiritual practices of the Amazon and the Andes for more than twenty-five years. While at San Francisco State University, he founded the Biological Self-Regulation laboratory to study how the mind creates psychosomatic health and disease.

Founder of the Four Winds Society, he instructs individuals throughout the world in the practice of energy mnedicine. Sandra Ingreman and Hank Wesselman have written Awakening To The Spirit World: The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelation as a collboration. They have brought together a circle of Western shamanic elders, each with a unique perspective and spiritual path.  I feel it is important to acknowledge all of the collaborators before beginning a discussion of their co-creation.

Sandra Ingerman, MA, is the author of Soul Retrieval: Mending the Fragmented Self, Welcome Home: Following Your Soul’s Journey Home, A Fall to Grace, Medicine for the Earth: How to Transform Personal and Environmental Toxins, Shamanic Journeying: A Beginner’s Guide, How to Heal Toxic Thoughts: Simple Tools for Personal Transformation and How to Thrive in Changing Times: Simple Tools to Create True Health, Wealth, Peace, and Joy for Yourself and the Earth.   She is the author of The Soul Retrieval Journey, The Beginner’s Guide to Shamanic Journeying and Miracles for the Earth lecture programs produced by Sounds True.

Sandra teaches workshops internationally on shamanic journeying, healing, and reversing environmental pollution using spiritual methods.  She has trained and founded an international alliance of Medicine for the Earth Teachers and Shamanic Teachers.  Sandra is recognized for bridging ancient cross-cultural healing methods into our modern culture addressing the needs of our times. Sandra is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist and Professional Mental Health Counselor. She is also a board certified expert on traumatic stress as well as certified in acute traumatic stress management.

Hank Wesselman, PhD

Research paleoanthropologist Hank Wesselman is one of those rare cutting edge scientists who truly walks between the worlds. He did his undergraduate work, as well as his Masters Degree, in Zoology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, then went on to receive his doctoral degree in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley.

A native New Yorker, he has spent much of his life living and working among traditional tribal peoples, primarily in Africa and Polynesia. He served in the US Peace Corps in the 1960′s, living among people of the Yoruba Tribe in Western Nigeria for two years. It was there that he first became interested in indigenous spiritual wisdom.

Since 1971, he has conducted research with an international group of scientists, exploring eastern Africa’s Great Rift Valley in search of answers to the mystery of human origins. During this time, he has worked alongside such worthies as Dr. Don Johanson, Lucy’s discoverer; Professor Tim White, whose expeditions have been featured in several TIME magazine cover stories, as well as members of the famous Leakey family. He is one of the primary investigators involved in the discovery of the “Ardi” sites (Ardiptithecus ramidus) in Ethiopia–recently revealed to be the famous missing link between humans and apes that Charles Darwin predicted would be found in Africa. Hank’s research is involved with the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the sites (4-6 million years old) at the time they were laid down.

Hank is also a shamanic student, practitioner and teacher, now in the 28th year of his apprenticeship.

In addition to his scientific papers and monographs, his books include his autobiographical trilogy: SPIRITWALKER: MESSAGES FROM THE FUTURE (Bantam, 1995), MEDICINEMAKER: MYSTIC ENCOUNTERS ON THE SHAMAN’S PATH (Bantam, 1998), and VISIONSEEKER: SHARED WISDOM FROM THE PLACE OF REFUGE (Hay House, 2001). These unusual books are focused upon a series of altered state experiences that began spontaneously out in the bush of Africa and document his investigations into a hidden reality that most of us have heard about, but few have experienced directly. In his explorations of these inner worlds, Hank may have also provided us with a glimpse into the possible evolutionary future of humanity. Combining the sober objectivity of a trained scientist with a mystic’s passionate search for deeper understanding, his books also contain revelations of the generally secret teachings of the Hawaiian kahunas.

His smaller teaching books include THE JOURNEY TO THE SACRED GARDEN: A GUIDE TO TRAVELING IN THE SPIRITUAL REALMS (Hay House 2003) and SPIRIT MEDICINE: HEALING IN THE SACRED REALMS (Hay House, 2004) co-authored with his wife Jill Kuykendall.

“Awakeninng to the Spirit World” is a Revelation

AWAKENING TO THE SPIRIT WORLD  The Shamanic Path of Direct Revelation by Sandra Ingerman and Hank Wesselman is truly a “Revelation” .  I have been carrying my copy around for months now as I have tried to find a concise way to review this work. Sandra Ingerman and Hank Wesseleman have created a book of depth and complexity that deserves to be read, reviewed, discussed and most importantly, fully experienced.

In the pages of this book and on the accompanying audio CD are gathered a circle of Western Shamanic Elders. Each contributor has walked their path for a significant part of their lifetimes.  The joy I find in reading this “manual on the oldest and most reliable human technology for accessing the realms of the spirit” comes from a realization that, finally, at last, we have graduated to a new level of maturity as Western Shamanic Practitioners.

Most all of the contributors’ early works fall into a category of “Discovery” of a hidden spiritual world.  Works of exploration. Stories of a “Hunter / Gatherer” nature.  Meetings with indigenous shamanic societies and slowly awakening to the truth, beauty and potency of the traditional shamanic world. Whether Hank Wesselman’s  Spiritwalker series or Sandra Ingerman’s Soul Retrieval: Mending the Fragmented Self; Alberto Villoldo’s, Tom Cowan’s and Jose Steven’s early books; or Dr. Michael Harner’s The Way of The Shaman. Each in their own way found a piece of a world that we as a society had forgotten and through their own experiences of flashes of direct revelation, were able to bring pieces of a mosaic back into our western consciousness. Awakening to the Spirit World steps beyond these early works of discovery and presents us with a comprehensive guide to shamanic practice firmly rooted in the experiences of direct engagement with the spirit world gained from a lifetime  of practice. Each one has made this their own practice through communication with their own Spiritual Allies.  Whether from a “Core” or Universal non culturally specific way of working: or by following a traditional indigenous path. Each has found a potent way to spirit that works in a modern Western world. This is their gift. Their example as Elders.

Alberto Villoldo speaks of a Q’ero prophecy that tells of the new Shamans coming from the West. A stone has been cast into the pond of our world. From the initial rediscovery and honoring of so many diverse traditions., the wave of awakening ripples out and manifests in a myriad of forms. Awakening manifests in a full spectrum; from the keepers of tradition to the creators of evolutionary change. The circle of elders gathered in this book surely are the leading edge of this prophecy being fulfilled.

I will explore the the depth of Awakening To the Spirit World over the next several Posts. I find this to be the only way to fully do justice to the range and scope of this book.

The journey over the rainbow bridge is the journey into higher awareness…

WALKING THE RAINBOW BRIDGE is a 9-month, non-residential training of experiential and initiatory processes for those who are committed to being a healing presence in the world. Within a safe and sacred community we will explore a path of Awakening, Initiation and Empowerment through universal shamanic practices of direct engagement with Spirit.

We will use Core Shamanism to build a base practice and incorporate other traditions to span the many worlds of global spiritual healing to strengthen this base. In order to span the void, a bridge must have deep foundations of support from both ends. One foundation to be deeply rooted in this Earth, honoring all Life; the other a deep, powerful pillar built upon an active connection to the world of Spirit. We will work together to open ourselves and embody a portal or conduit for Spirit to flow into this Earth and manifest change.

THE TRAINING INCLUDES: Shamanic Journeying to the Upper, Lower and Middle Worlds; Building strong and trusting alliances with one’s own Power Animals and Teachers; Ethical considerations; Working with Spirits of Nature; Creating ritual; Psycho-pomp and after-life related work (Death & Dying); Working with the Spirits of the Ancestors and Descendants; Shamanism and Divination; Medicine for the Earth and Healing with Spiritual Light; Creation of community and techniques for personal healing.

Munay-Ki Nine Rites

The Munay-Ki fire ceremony is used to anchor, germinate, nurture, feed and grow the energetic seeds of transformation and harmony planted with the transmission of each Rite. These Fires can be either community events or a private practice. The Munay-Ki Rites are a “give away” from spirit to humanity. We are honored to pass these rites on to you at any of our fire ceremonies. The Rites are offered free of charge.

We are honored to offer Mentoring, Coaching and classes in the Munay-Ki Nine Rites. We gift the Rites and then teach you how to pass these transmission on. You have a part to play in creating the great planetary shift.

The Foundation Rites class:


This course prepares the student to receive and transmit the first four Munay-Ki Rites, The Healer’s Rite, The Bands of Power, The Harmony Rites and the Seer Rite You begin your spiritual and physical journey to become an Earthkeeper.

You will receive the Foundation Rites. You will be taught how to transmit the foundation rites and will transmit them to your classmates. We provide ample mentoring and time to work with these new energies and incorporate them into your field. We walk you through the teaching methods with plenty of practice sessions so you are comfortable and well prepared to pass on these rites.

You will be introduced to ceremony that creates and holds sacred space on a group and personal level. The class is a mix of lecture and discussion, combined with some meditation, journey-work, the transmission of the rites, and ceremony that help you anchor the rites and grow them within.

The Lineage Rites Class:

Presented by the Center For Shamanic Healing and Flaming Heart Retreat Center. This gathering will be facilitated by Kent Dorsey.

Continued Exploration of Sacred Healing through Transfiguration and Transmutation. This 2-day course focuses on Spiritual Healing of  Dis-ease and Dis-harmony.
